Start from your costs, not from a number you heard. Say rent, transport, food and family come to R15,000 a month. To have R15,000 reach your account, you need R16,700 gross: R1,521 goes to PAYE, R167 to UIF, and R15,012 lands in your account. Quote that gross figure, because South African employers usually talk in gross pay.
How much gross pay do I need for a given take-home?
These are for someone under 65 with no pension fund or medical aid, rounded up to the next R100.
- Take home R10,000: ask for R10,600
- Take home R15,000: ask for R16,700
- Take home R20,000: ask for R23,100
- Take home R25,000: ask for R29,900
- Take home R30,000: ask for R37,000
- Take home R40,000: ask for R52,000
What does the government pay for each level?
Public service pay isn't a secret, so there's nothing to guess. The first notch of each level from 1 April 2026 is below, per year before tax. Most posts start at the first notch, and the advert states it.
- Level 4: R201,093
- Level 5: R237,453
- Level 6: R280,278
- Level 7: R338,106
- Level 8: R413,001
- Level 9: R487,197
- Level 10: R605,742
- Level 11: R932,292, as an all-inclusive package
- Level 12: R1,101,468, as an all-inclusive package
What about private companies?
We hold no reliable figure, and we won't make one up. On 1 November 2026 our catalogue had 1,770 open jobs, and 401 of them stated pay in the salary field. All 401 came from 14 public employers. Not one private employer stated a figure there.
So ask. When a private recruiter asks what you expect, you can ask first what the budget for the post is, whether it's gross, and which benefits come with it. Then give one figure, the one from this tool plus a margin you can defend with your experience.
What is the lowest pay that's legal?
The national minimum wage is R30.23 an hour from 1 March 2026. On a 45 hour week, the gazette prints that as R1,360.35 a week and R5,894.40 a month. Some sectors have higher floors: in retail, a cashier in an Area A municipality gets at least R33.44 an hour. Nobody can agree to less.
Questions people ask
Should I give my salary expectation in gross or net?
Give it in gross and say so. If you say R20,000 and mean take-home while they hear gross, you're about R2,292 a month short.
What does all-inclusive package mean in a government advert?
It means the figure already covers your benefits, so it isn't the same as basic pay. Levels 11 and 12 and many medical and engineering posts are advertised this way. Plus benefits means the benefits come on top of the figure.
Can I negotiate a government salary?
The advert states the notch, and it's not an open negotiation at entry. If you already earn more in a similar post, ask HR how the department handles it, and read our guide on negotiating an offer.
Does this include a pension or medical aid?
No. It assumes neither. If your offer takes a fund contribution or a premium off your pay, use the take-home pay calculator, which has boxes for both, and add those costs to the amount you need.
