A teaching search in South Africa has several tracks. A public school appointment, an independent school post, a temporary substitute role and a college vacancy can have different employers and instructions. Before applying, identify the school, province, grade and subject, then check whether your qualification and professional registration match the advert. A classroom title alone does not tell you the appointment basis. This guide shows how to verify the route and present evidence of teaching practice without overstating it.

Confirm the professional gate before choosing adverts

The South African Council for Educators says educators covered by its rules must be registered before employment as educators. The Department of Basic Education also directs qualified teachers to SACE and explains that foreign qualifications need SAQA evaluation before registration. Read the current SACE criteria for your situation and keep your registration evidence ready. Do not assume that completing a teaching qualification automatically means registration has been finalised. If you are still studying, describe the qualification as in progress rather than awarded.

Check the vacancy for grade, subject, language, special education experience and the employment body. A mathematics post in a particular grade is a different match from a general classroom assistant role. Prepare a short table of eligibility: award, SACE status, subjects, practice placements and location. If one essential item is missing, ask the named employer whether an application is possible before sending documents. A school may offer non-teaching support work with a different specification; do not present that as a way around professional requirements.

Find the real recruitment route

The Department of Basic Education publishes its own vacancies and information for teachers. It also describes a Qualified Educators Recruitment Database for appropriately qualified people seeking public school work. Provincial education departments and individual schools may have their own notices. Read the current advert to determine which body is actually hiring and which portal or address accepts applications. A national department vacancy is not automatically a vacancy at every public school.

For an independent school, use the school's official site or the organisation named in its advert. Check whether the notice is for a permanent appointment, a fixed term or a substitute assignment, and whether the application is submitted through a school, a province or a central database. Note the reference number and closing date from the live source. Old vacancy circulars and forwarded images often stay online after a post has closed. Save the original advert and a submission confirmation so you can tell a real interview invitation from a recycled message.

Show what happened in your classroom practice

A strong application gives evidence of teaching rather than a list of educational slogans. Describe a lesson you planned, the learning goal, the materials you chose and how you checked understanding. If learners struggled, explain what you changed and what you observed afterward. A student teacher can use supervised placement work, but should say who held responsibility for the class. A more experienced applicant can describe assessment, parent communication, safeguarding and collaboration with colleagues without identifying individual children.

Match the example to the school's stated needs. For a language post, discuss reading or writing feedback; for science, practical safety and conceptual explanation; for foundation phase, age-appropriate routines. Keep samples anonymous and do not upload identifiable learner records to a public portfolio. State the exact qualification and SACE status near the top of the CV. If the post requires a public service form or certified documents, follow the live instruction. A good teaching story cannot compensate for a missing compulsory application item.

Prepare for a lesson demonstration and safeguarding questions

An interview may ask you to explain a lesson plan, respond to a learner misconception or describe how you manage a difficult moment. Practise a clear answer: objective, activity, check, adjustment. If asked for a demonstration, confirm the grade, subject, time and materials before preparing. Do not build an elaborate lesson that cannot fit the allotted period. Explain how you would work within school policy when a safety or child protection concern arises; avoid claiming authority that belongs to school management or a designated safeguarding process.

Verify the invitation through the official school or department contact, especially if it arrived from a private number. No legitimate pathway should require payment to secure an interview. Work.net.za links to original vacancy sources and is free for job seekers. Bring copies of requested documents only through the channel the employer specifies. Ask who observes the demonstration and whether the role includes extracurricular duties, travel between campuses or support for a particular learner group.

Read the appointment and build a continuing search

Before accepting, ask who employs you, which school or campuses are covered, the subject allocation, term, start date, pay and supervision. A substitute role with a defined end date is different from an ongoing appointment. Read the written contract and the applicable employment terms, then compare them with the advert. If a post is in another province, work out travel and housing before committing. Do not resign from another role based only on a verbal promise or a recruitment database listing.

Keep a weekly search list covering the relevant provincial department, the national department's own vacancies, specific schools and any approved database. Update your CV as you gain classroom experience and record which grade and subject examples earned follow-up. If the answer is no, check whether the issue was eligibility, location or how you demonstrated practice. Consider a narrower subject or support role only when it genuinely matches your qualifications. The best teaching search is careful about professional registration and specific about learners' work.
