How to apply for South African public service jobs
Use the current DPSA circular, complete Z83 correctly and send documents to the hiring department.

South African public service vacancies have formal instructions that vary by department and post. The Department of Public Service and Administration publishes a Public Service Vacancy Circular and the Z83 application form. A vacancy copied into a WhatsApp group can omit an amendment or closing date. Use the current circular and the original hiring notice to prepare each application.
Find the live circular and check who is recruiting
Begin at the DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular page. Open the current circular and read the introductory directions as well as the individual vacancy. Departments, not DPSA, answer questions about their own adverts. Note the hiring department, post title, salary level, duty station, reference number, contact details and closing date. Check whether the circular contains amendments or withdrawn posts. A screenshot of one page can be outdated after a correction.
The government's public employment guide says vacancies are generally advertised through the circular, but a candidate should confirm whether an external applicant may apply to the particular post. Some departments also provide their own recruitment pages and additional instructions. If the role looks relevant, go to that department's official site and compare the details. Work.net.za can help you discover a role, yet the original advert controls the application. Bookmark its exact page or save the PDF, and record the issue and reference in your application tracker.
Complete the current Z83 and reference accurately
The DPSA page offers the current Z83 form, including an editable version. Use that form, fill every required field and write the reference number exactly as advertised. Give a truthful account of your education, employment and skills. If an answer needs more room, follow the form and advert instructions rather than squeezing unreadable text into a small box. Check that contact information works and that the document opens after saving. Do not reuse an old Z83 simply because it is already on your computer.
Prepare a CV that supports the form rather than contradicting it. Use the same dates, qualifications and role names in both. Explain a gap briefly if the advert or form asks. Where the vacancy lists competencies, give concrete examples from work, study or volunteering. An administrative application might mention records handled and a quality check; a technician could name a system and safe procedure. Do not claim a certificate you have not earned. Qualification and reference checks can occur later, so accuracy matters more than a crowded CV.
Send what the individual advert asks for
The government guide says departments may request a CV and may ask for certified copies of qualifications, identity documents or other records. Requirements differ. Read the specific notice to see what must accompany the first submission and what may be requested later. Follow its route: an email, a department portal, a physical address or another method. A form sent to DPSA rather than the hiring department can miss the correct destination. If the advert requires a subject line or reference, include it exactly.
Allow time for file uploads, scanning or travel to a submission point. An email sent just before the deadline can fail because an attachment is too large; a portal can ask you to correct a field. Name files clearly and verify that all pages are legible. Keep an application copy and any automatic acknowledgement, but do not assume a response means the application is complete. If you spot an error after submission, use the hiring department's stated contact route and explain the correction once.
Avoid false vacancies and prepare for selection
A public logo, letterhead or reference pattern is easy to copy. Search the circular and the department's own site independently, rather than following only a forwarded link. The government guide and DPSA directions show where the real form and circular are published. No one should be paid to secure a post or an interview. If an unknown caller asks for a deposit, end the conversation and contact the hiring department using details from its official notice.
If invited to interview, revisit the vacancy's duties and selection criteria. Prepare examples that show public-service judgment, accuracy, service to residents and the technical skills of the post. Bring documents requested in the invitation, not an unasked pile of sensitive papers. Ask for the interview location and format from the official contact if unclear. Recruitment can take time; continue applying to other suitable roles. Keep dates of contact and copies of correspondence so you can answer a legitimate follow-up without sending data to a stranger.
Keep your public service application record
A separate folder for each vacancy prevents errors. Save the circular issue, original advert, completed Z83, CV, supporting documents, email or portal confirmation and any later amendment. Name the folder with the hiring department and reference number. This matters when several posts have similar titles or one department advertises in more than one province. If invited to an assessment, you can review the exact criteria you applied against.
Avoid sending a new version to a general address unless the hiring department instructs you to do so. The circular explains that enquiries about an advert go to the advertising department. If a deadline or contact changes in an amendment, update your tracker and follow the new official notice. After a rejection, check whether the problem was eligibility, missing evidence or interview performance before applying again. Do not interpret silence as permission to pay someone for an inside route.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I get form Z83?
Use the current form linked from the DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular page. Check the individual advert for any additional department instructions.
Do I send my application to DPSA?
Usually the advertised hiring department is the destination. Follow the address or portal in that exact vacancy and use its reference number.
Are certified copies always required at the first stage?
Do not assume either way. The government guide says departments may request them; the individual advert tells you what to submit for that post.
