Finding logistics and freight jobs in South Africa
Check transport employers, terminals and warehouses separately and show accurate, safe operations.

Logistics work moves goods, information and vehicles across many employers. In South Africa a port terminal, railway operator, warehouse, courier and retailer may all advertise logistics roles, but their equipment and schedules differ. A job title such as operations clerk or driver cannot tell you the licence, shift or site. Start with the employer's own advert, map the actual workflow and show evidence that you can keep a handover accurate when delays or exceptions occur.
Follow the chain of employers, not just the cargo
Transnet publishes its own career opportunities and describes work across rail, ports and related transport infrastructure. A warehouse serving a port may instead employ through a private operator. A courier may deliver for a retailer without being employed by the retailer. Read the legal company and duty station on each vacancy. Ask whether the role sits in planning, customer service, loading, driving, maintenance or compliance. These paths share a supply chain but require different experience.
Be wary of a posting that names a famous terminal yet gives only a personal messaging number and no verifiable employer. Open the official careers page, check the requisition and confirm the contact. A talent pool is not a current job offer. Record the worksite because a role named after a city may start at an industrial area or transport node far from its centre. Ask about the roster and security access before assuming you can reach the site at the advertised start time.
Translate routine work into strong evidence
For a warehouse role, describe receiving, picking, cycle counts, discrepancy reporting or dispatch checks. For transport coordination, show how you confirmed schedules, documented exceptions and communicated changes to drivers or customers. For a port or rail role, describe safety, permits or operational records only within your actual training and authority. A statement such as good at logistics is less useful than a specific example of catching a wrong quantity before a load left the warehouse.
If the post requires a driver's licence, equipment certificate or a particular system, state the exact status. Do not imply you can operate a forklift or heavy vehicle because you assisted someone who could. An entry applicant can use a TVET placement, stockroom shift or volunteer distribution project, clearly labelled. Keep a work diary with tasks and supervisors who can confirm them. Do not publish a previous employer's customer list, shipment details or security procedures in a portfolio.
Search the right channels and complete each application
Use the original employer's job portal for current roles. Transnet's career route is useful for its own posts; a municipal storekeeper vacancy may follow the municipality's separate process; a national department post may require DPSA instructions. A private logistics company may recruit through an ATS that creates a new reference for each location. Check the deadline and attachments on the live listing. Do not rely on an old social media image that names a familiar employer but links somewhere else.
Tailor your CV to the function. Put stock accuracy near the top for inventory work, routing and exception handling for dispatch, maintenance evidence for technical roles, and calm escalation for customer operations. If an agency is involved, ask who employs and pays you and which site hosts the work. Work.net.za is free for applicants and links to original applications. An interview fee, access-card fee or promise of a guaranteed shift after a payment is a reason to verify the claim with the real employer.
Test the actual offer against a real shift
Ask for the written title, site, start date, pay, overtime arrangements, shift cycle, contract period and reporting line. A night shift near a port or warehouse may require transport that is unavailable when it ends. Calculate that before accepting, and ask whether the employer provides transport. If the role is labelled remote but involves dispatch control or physical records, clarify which duties actually require site attendance. Read probation, notice and any equipment responsibility clause in the contract.
Compare the offer with the vacancy. A temporary labour supplier may employ you for work at a client site, so the payslip and supervisor can come from different organisations. Know which one handles hours, injury reporting and payroll questions. Use the Basic Conditions guidance for general employment terms, subject to the role's applicable rules. Save the advert and signed contract and check the first payslip. Small misunderstandings about shift allowance or unpaid time can compound quickly in a rotating roster.
Build a credible progression route
After gaining experience, choose a next step: inventory control, transport planning, fleet administration, operations supervision, maintenance or data analysis. Each requires different evidence. A stock controller might show reconciliations; a planner might show a route change that reduced missed deliveries without inventing a number; a supervisor might show safe handover and coaching. Ask your manager for feedback and training tied to a real responsibility, not an attractive job title alone.
Keep a tracker of employers and roles and revisit official pages. Freight demand can shift between sites; a company with no suitable opening today may advertise later. If several applications fail, compare the exact licence, system or shift requirement with your profile. Seek legitimate training where the gap is real. Do not buy a vague logistics certificate because a recruiter says it unlocks a guaranteed post. Demonstrated accuracy, safety and reliable communication are transferable across the chain, but each application should still name the specific work.
