Job applications and reasonable accommodation in South Africa
Describe your skills, request the access you need and use official guidance when a barrier appears.

A disability does not erase qualifications or experience. Employment equity guidance in South Africa addresses barriers in recruitment and work, including reasonable accommodation. The practical task is to identify what lets you demonstrate the essential functions of a role, ask for it through a suitable channel and keep a record. The details depend on the person and job; no single adjustment fits everyone.
Begin with the role and your evidence
Read the essential duties and qualifications before deciding whether the role is suitable. Prepare a CV that shows what you have done, the tools and methods you use and the results you can discuss. You do not need to turn every application into a medical history. A portfolio or work sample can show competence, but remove confidential data. If a task can be completed with a different tool or work arrangement, think through how you would explain that in relation to the essential function rather than asking an employer to guess.
The South African Code of Good Practice on Employment of Persons with Disabilities says accommodation can be relevant at recruitment and during employment. It gives examples such as accessible facilities, adapted equipment, changes to assessment material and adjustments to working conditions. The appropriate option depends on the role and individual needs. Read the employer's application instructions, and if a barrier prevents you from completing a standard form or test, ask the recruitment contact for an accessible route before the deadline.
Request an adjustment clearly and privately
Describe the barrier and the adjustment that would let you participate. A useful request names the stage: an accessible interview venue, captions, a different format for a written test, screen-reader-compatible materials or additional time where appropriate. You can explain how the adjustment relates to the task without revealing unrelated medical details. Contact the employer through its official channel, not a public comment on an advert. Keep the request and response, including agreed timing, in a private record.
The Code says the obligation may arise when a candidate or employee voluntarily discloses a need or when it is reasonably evident. It also emphasises consultation about what is reasonable. You can propose an option, but the employer may suggest an equally effective alternative. Ask how the adjusted assessment will measure the same job skills. If you receive a refusal without explanation, request the reason in writing and consult an appropriate adviser or support organisation. Do not accept a recruitment agent's claim that asking for access automatically disqualifies you.
Prepare for interviews and assessments
Ask about the venue, format, software and duration early enough to resolve a problem. If travel or building access is uncertain, request directions or a suitable alternative. Practise examples of work that show judgment, teamwork and the skill in the advert. Decide in advance how much you want to explain about the way you work. You can keep the conversation focused on the tasks, equipment or schedule that will allow you to perform them. An interviewer should be able to understand your contribution without a long disclosure of personal history.
The department's technical guidance says reasonable accommodation starts before employment and continues through the relationship. If a test or online portal is inaccessible, document the problem with a date and screenshot if safe, then contact the employer. Do not submit a blank test just because the system failed to work with your assistive technology. Request an alternative that measures the intended skill. Retain copies of the advert and your submission. These records help someone assess what happened if an access issue is not resolved.
Discuss a practical working arrangement after an offer
An offer is the point to clarify equipment, workspace, supervision, travel, emergency procedures and communication. The Code lists possible accommodations but does not prescribe the same item for every role. Explain what you need to perform the essential work and ask who will arrange it and by when. Record the agreement in the offer, onboarding plan or a written HR note. If needs change after starting, ask for another discussion rather than treating the first arrangement as permanent.
Read the employment contract as you would for any role: pay, hours, leave, duties and notice. Compare it with the Basic Conditions guidance and ask about unexplained differences. An accommodation should not be used to hide a lower role or a change in the pay you were offered. Ask how performance will be measured and when feedback is given. A clear plan benefits both employee and supervisor. If a safety procedure or equipment is essential, do not begin a task before it is available and explained.
Respond to discrimination or an unresolved barrier
Keep the advert, assessment instructions, accommodation request, response and any relevant work record. Write a factual timeline: what you asked for, when, what the employer said and how the barrier affected the application or work. Avoid posting private medical information publicly to prove your case. The official employment equity guidance is a better starting point than an anonymous social-media opinion, but it cannot decide your individual facts. Seek qualified local advice promptly if the issue may be discrimination or dismissal.
If one employer does not respond, continue applying to roles that fit your skills while following up through a normal HR channel. Ask trusted career services or disability support organisations to review the accessibility of your application materials. Work.net.za does not charge candidates, and no person should demand payment to obtain an accommodation or interview. Check any offer through the employer's official contact and keep your documents secure. The aim is a fair opportunity to show that you can perform the work, not a special claim that bypasses the role's essential requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Must I disclose my full diagnosis in an initial application?
Focus on the accommodation needed for the process and the essential work. Use a private official channel and obtain individual advice if a form demands more information than you think is relevant.
Can an assessment format be changed?
The official Code includes changes to assessment materials among possible accommodations. Ask the employer for an effective way to assess the same skill.
What if my needs change after I start?
Request a new discussion. Official guidance recognises that accommodation can continue and change during employment.
